Dipor Beel Sanctuary

Area: 4.14sq. kms/414 ha
Established in: 1989 as a sanctuary
2003 as a proposed Ramsar site.

Description:
Dipor Beel SanctuaryDeeporbeel is situated at a distance of 18 kms from Guwahati city and is a proposed Bird Sanctuary.The area of the sanctuary is 4.14 sq kms. In this area the Forest Dept of Assam has detailed 125 species of birds.

Visiting season:
Open all throughout the year though December to march is when the birds can be seen.

Access:
By Road: Guwahati is connected to all the major cities of India by excellent network of roads.
By Air: There are flights form sll the major cities to and fro Guwahati.
By Rail: Guwahati is the major railway station connected to most of India with decent and comfortable trains.

Temperature:
The area is temperate and hence the temperatures never go too low or high. Min/Max is 7 to 30oC.cent and comfortable trains.

Safari Timings:
The sanctuary remains open all throughout the day hours.

Accomodation:
Dipor Beel SanctuaryBeing so close to Guwahati one can stay at any of the hotels of Guwahati to come and see this sanctuary.

Wildlife:
Atleast 150 different species have been recorded from here including the Adjutant Stork. It is a beautiful area teeming with avifauna in winter seasons. The odd monitor lizard or snake are not very uncommon.

This wetland of ca. 50km2 near Guwahati is another key site for wintering Ferruginous Duck in Assam. Deepor Beel has been regularly monitored as it the nearest wetland to Guwahati University (ca. 1km away). Ferruginous Duck were mainly recorded between the end of October and mid-March every year. The earliest arrival date was 20 October (1993), the latest departure date 18 March (1995).
